Hume’s glee

Letter to the LRB

Jonathan Rée’s sparkling article on Hume ends with an unwitting revelation of Harris’s book, namely of that which is constant in Hume: “his gleeful sense that everything we know is wrong.” And in his appetizing reportage on Hume’s culinary vocation, Rée for his part reveals a positive constant of Humean morality: the gleeful imperative to Eat, drink and be merry. In this season: Peace on Earth and goodwill to all Humean Beings!
