In Germany, it is a moment of both symbolic and material significance when you go to the town hall to declare that your allegiance is no longer with the Catholic Church, and that you will therefore no longer pay Church taxes.
Imagine that you do this, and the pope resigns the very next day. The first pope ever to have resigned!
