XVIII – “When the state is benighted”

When the great way falls into misuse

There are “benevolence” and “rectitude”;

When cleverness emerges

There is great hypocrisy;

When the six relations are at variance

There are “filial children”;

When the state is benighted

There are “loyal” ministers.

(My quotation marks)

When it comes to the way, saying it is not doing it; the great hypocrisy, bad faith.

Once, the ruler ruled.

Then, all leaders were committed to equality and to a fair sharing of society’s wealth.

But now the state is benighted and disloyalty will not be tolerated.
