A Gale Blowing In

A gale blowing in:

One boat’s dock ropes are

Stretched ashore, straining.

The first sinews snap

And the boat gets wild

Bucking violently

Backing to the sea

Tossing like a bull

Hell-bent and maddened

Beating on the waves

Beating on the waves

Until they release

The ropes, bursting

And consume him as

A snake eats a rat

Calmly now the sea

Leaves him a shattered

Wreck in a placid

Harbour. Now he laps

Against the jetty

Vacantly looks up

A drunk at dying.
